I had a beaver scramble up a bank and come out of the water to sniff my butt once, but never a bear. Yikes! At least he wasn't backcountry and was able to get to his vehicle.

    Any other critter encounters??

I don't know why people somehow feel safer in a tent -- you are every bit as exposed. And hey, if it is your time to go what are you gonna do?

Yikes! Sent a text to my son who lives in Idaho Falls so he is aware.
There is a skinny healthy guy inside me screaming to get out, but I can usually shut him up with a dozen Boston Creams from Dunkin Donuts.

First thought was “Yikes”. Second thought was oh what a tale to be able to tell, “well there was this one time I had a bear knock me outta bed”.
Had a bear come into our camp one night just after sunset, first it was panic and run, then it was realized it was more scared than us. It had been lurking just outside our spot for a couple hours and we just didn’t know what that sound it made was. Then the next step was scare it off with pots and pans being banged together, then laugh hysterically for awhile and finally not fall asleep until 2:30-3:00am in the morning. Actual intruding was around 9:45-10:00pm
    Love the BWCA.

Glad he was able to get out into his car. I wonder what it would have been like without the car. I'm always thinking about encounters like this when I hike in northern Michigan/U.P but Iv'e never even seen one. I'm sure they have seen me though.

I'm guessing he didn't have a bugnet. That would be a mess.

That is the single reason I miss carrying larger noisy pans. Years ago we banged pans and yelled in the middle of the night also when something that sounded pretty big was rustling around camp. Now all I have is a little pot and even smaller mug that doesn't even phase the mice.

All the people that encountered that bear in Teton Canyon were very fortunate. As for myself, I'll just keep believing that it'll never happen to me...

Fortunate it was a black bear and not a grizzly. We have both in the area. Bear spray is always indicated except in winter after hibernation.
