    Houston Mesa Overnighter

Took a quick overnighter with my wife and younger kids and a couple of other families on Friday-Saturday at Houston Mesa Campground near Payson, AZ. When we arrived, it was 100 degrees, but overcast. When we started to set up camp, it began raining, which cooled the area to to 72 degrees. After about an hour, the rain let up and the temperature began to rise again, but it did not get above 85 degrees as the sun set. Overnight temps dropped below 68 degrees, making it nice and cool.

My son and I set up our hammocks, while the rest of the group opted for tents. I got to field test my Trail Lair with my new Trail Winder UQ. I have the full width modular system, with 3.6 Climashield sewn into the UQ and a second 3.6 insert. I unsnapped the insert and used it as a blanket/TQ since it was so warm. It is the first time I can remember not making any adjustments to my UQ beyond hooking it to the hammock suspension. As you can see from the photos the next morning, I was in no hurry to get out of my hammock.

My son used a HH Explorer with 2QZQ mods that we have owned for 10+ years. It is still a great hammock and gets regular use. I replaced the continuous loops and ridgeline with this season and pair it with the DIY sleeping bag underquilt when he uses it.

A great overnight trip that cooled off just enough to beat the heat!
There is a skinny healthy guy inside me screaming to get out, but I can usually shut him up with a dozen Boston Creams from Dunkin Donuts.
