Does anyone know how these hammock remain relatively flat since they are hung with the clews vertical. Some appear to have pole running along the sides but often they don't. Historically did they all have poles they have been neglected in the living history displays? or is there some other magic at work? Poles along the sides of the mattress? Stiff mattresses?
Here is a still from Master and Commander showing the flat hang and apparent lack of poles:

Here are some from the HMS Victory again with lack of poles:

And Nelson's hammock with lots of poles here and there:

Haven tents/hammock are similar but much easier to understand as are bridge type hammocks as both are hung on more or less horizontal lines.
I live in a rather small house and don't really have room for a normal hammock (although it does not stop me from using it occasionally) and the vertical hang of these would work really well.
Thanks
P.S. Sorry I couldn't get the images to show in the post, first post and all.
