    Grayson Highlands Hang

I done an overnighter last year at Grayson Highlands parking at Massie Gap, camping at Thomas Knob shelter and looping back to the truck the next day. I want to do something different this time. Does anyone have suggestions for a 1 night 2 day trip if parking at Elk Garden or one of the parking spots on SR 603? Please include camping spots for the night which have Hammock possibilities. Thanks in advance!

This is one of the ways that I do a loop around there. Lots of different ways to change it up, though.

Looks very interesting. I will have to give it a try. Where do you hang for the night on this route?
    Thank you

There are plenty of spots, but I usually stay somewhere around the shelters since there is water access - Thomas Knob the first night and Old Orchard the second. There is also water at Scales and Wise Shelter and along the Lewis Fork Trail section.

I did the loop Dvankirk suggested last August with el Gordo. Old Orchard seemed to have the best hanging trees and Thomas Knob had the best views. You need at least 2 nights to make the full loop worthwhile, but there’s lots of side trails that make smaller single overnight loops around the AT shelters possible. Scales is mostly open grass/tent camping but if you have a 4-wheel drive it’s accessible by vehicle to use as a base camp location.

I have previously done a loop starting at Elk Garden, following the AT around then picking up Pine Mountain trail or Creat Trail back to Rhododendron Gap when the AT breaks north for Old Orchard. That was 3 days, 2 nights and 20 miles.

I’d suggest the best sites with access to water and views is at Rhododendron Gap between the AT and Crest Trails. There are a few sites for hanging at Thomas Knob shelter, and Wise shelter is very nice but doesn’t have the magnetic views.

I just got back from a quick 2 day trip and temperatures along the high ridges never got above 80F, which was a nice respite from the 95F in central NC.
