Okutama Day Hike: Raiden - Takamitsu - Iwatakeiishi

Another day hike to punish my body with increasing duration and effort. Hoping my next trip will be an actual camp to relearn all my hammocking skills lost from atrophy.

Planned start is from a station I have not been before: JR Futamatao.

Trail head is on the north side but toilet and water is at the south exit. There are no convenience stores nearby.

Never noticed these posters designed by the local government.

The trailhead is not marked. Turn left at sign.

The unmarked trailhead. Plenty of running water for at least the first half-km of trail. There were plenty of places to camp but perhaps too close to town.

It was a very pleasant trail and I hit my first summit after climbing 270 meter, Mt. Raiden (雷電山). If my memory is correct, the name also belonged to a Mortal Kombat character.

My map said I can climb the next saddle from another trail but it was closed, so I opted for a 40 min road walk to the next summit.

Along the way explored Kogenji Temple

Found my way back on the trailhead and to my next destination: the unremarkable Mt. Takamizu (高水山) and the more impressive shrine (temple?), Takamizusanjofukuin (高水山常福院). There were plenty of places to get water from the trailhead with a final place to camel up at the dam.

Next summit and lunch break: Mt. Iwatakeiishi

    Quick lunch spot

Some clear cutting along an exposed path.

Last summit: Aoi Shrine on Mt Sogaku (惣岳山)

    Peek inside

Afterwards, it was a gentle grade back down to JR Miktake station.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. This post had me looking back at your others. I have now added “backpacking Japan” to my bucket list.

What a great day hike in a beautiful and historic area. It is amazing how the Japanese built those shrines high up in the mountains. The intricate carpentry, stonework and carving is sublimely beautiful.
