Question MI-> Pictured Rocks NLS Info

Contemplating a trip in August to Pictured Rocks. Anyone have any good intel on which backcountry sites are hammock-able? They have a nice backcountry guide with pictures, so I can get some idea, but I'd hate to get stuck with no trees at a reserved site.

I don't have any site-specific info, I just know it's difficult to stay within the rules of being within 'X' feet of a post planted in the middle of each site. I know that's not much help, but you may want to be prepared to go to ground.
    Good luck,

Just a heads up on a campground close to Pictured Rocks that is scenic and not very busy: Kingston Lake State Park.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you, despite having backpacked Pictured Rocks before. But since we're on the topic, I was wondering the same thing about the Porcupine Mountains. The DNR reservation site doesn't even have pictures of the sites so I really have no idea if a hammock set up would work.

I second what Redoleary said. They expect you to stay within a certain distance of a sign, and because they planned the sites for tent camping, that area usually does’t have appropriate trees.

I was there last year, nearly all are hammockable. Note the bigger issue is getting any reservation. There is some availability, but need to get reservations in sooner rather than later.

Image taken of 1/2 half August availability on 2/16/2022 from recreation.gov Note: this is not the whole list.

For example these are the only two nights available for the whole month of August at Chapel Beach.

Just got back from PRNL a few days ago. We only did the middle section (Lowry Creek to Miner's Castle) with the scouts. While we stayed in the group campsites, I was scouting all of the individual sites we came across for future trips. I'd say that they all will accommodate at least 1 hammock very easily. Most of them would handle a 2nd or 3rd hammock without too much of a problem (but you might need to be creative).

Note: As the other person said, reservations are the problem We booked our trip back on January 1st when things opened up for the year. Within a few weeks, quite a few sites were booked up and by summer, the pickings are very thin. If you are flexible on your timing even a little bit and go after labor day, there should be more access. Before labor day, its very busy there but after that, schools startup and quite a few things (like cruises and kayak tours) start to close down for the season. This makes it much more peaceful (we did that years ago and are looking to head back just a small group during fall season sometime in the next few years).

I’ve hammock backpacked both PRNL and a 4 day route through the porkies with a friend and we never had an issue. I’d have to look back at pictures to find the campsites we stayed at but I don’t think you’d have too much trouble if you can get the reservations. PRNL trip was in October fwiw.

The sites at Pictured Rocks only allow 2 hammocks per site. 3 of us are going in Oct and had to reserve 2sites for each night. If people spread into someone else’s site it probably won’t be appreciated. At the porkies some sites, especially along Lk Sup do not have great sites. For multiple tents or hammocks. They can have only one good spot.
