You can keep track of your progress with an online spreadsheet such as Lighterpack. It is free and a great way to organize things, although it is nice to have a good scale and not depend on manufacturers' given weights. A little digital luggage scale is super handy for heavier and bulkier items that won't fit on the smaller scale or exceed its weight limit.

HERE is an example of my Lighterpack packing list from a recent trip in eastern PA (Pinchot Trail). A thru hiker will typically carry a couple more back-up clothing items such as sleeping socks and a spare set of dry long underwear, and often an extra pair of socks and some "laundry day" shorts. But for a simple one- or two-night trip in fairly benign weather I don't carry more than is necessary.

You might notice the Helinox Chair Zero on the list. This was a low mileage trip with a lot of hanging around the fire with friends so it was a nice luxury item worth carrying. I would not pack this on a longer hike with high-mileage days. Even so, base weight with the chair was still about 12 lbs, total pack weight about 16.5 lbs.

Thus ends my effort to proselytize. Getting out on the trail is the best teacher... one of those stern nuns that raps your knuckles with a ruler.
