just did Henry coe to test out my first ever hammock. booked it months in advance, and it ended up being during that godawful heatwave a month ago. it was pretty rough in the daytime from bugs to heat. night was gorgeous, however. perfect view of the stars through the trees and my bug net.

I've been going to Henry Coe almost every week lately. Just short overnight trips. It's been dry but we're getting a bit of rain now. It's going to get down in the 20s soon but I'm down to meet up if anyone is thinking of heading there. I'll be going there all Winter.

Your last video showed a tent in front of a single thick tree. Are there any sites at Henry Coe that can accommodate a hammock or two?

Quartz, if you are not familiar with poison oak and/or poison ivy, you might want to get educated on it. And not from those useless plant books with just line drawings. I don’t have a ready source to ask - we don’t have it around here - but I know some who have unknowing stumbled upon it in the Big Sur area. Not Fun. If you stick to established trails and formal camp sites I imagine you’d be fine. But part of hammock camping can be to go off the beaten path.

Maybe there’s a community college nearby with a botany class. You don’t have to take the class (but it might be interesting). Just ask the instructor if she can show you an example of what to watch out for.

In the Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur area. If it is green (at any time of the year) there is poison oak embedded in it. At least it is along the coast.

Thanks! I'm from Minnesota, where we have these poisonous plants, too. I'm learning about the other potential dangers that are in this surrounding area that I don't have experience with (such as rattle snakes and black widow and brown recluse spiders).

Rattlesnakes - check
Black Widow spiders - check, but mostly around houses and woodpiles
Brown recluse - Nope, not here - Etymologists LAUGH at the number of brown recluse bites reported in CA, way higher per year than the number of actual spiders EVER found here.

Maybe you watched one of my older videos at Ridge View. There's trees around that site where I've hung my hammock before. There's also a nice spot behind the privy.
It's a bit challenging to find nice trees in general.
I had to do a bit of scouting around.
There's some nice trees to hang at Frog Lake.

On the Hunting Hollow side there's a lot more options since you don't have to camp at a designated spot.

Ridge View is my go to chill spot for hanging. Redfern Pond is another.
