TomTom, I’ll be there tomorrow morning Saturday June 4 2022, hopefully by 900am
You might get a bit of rain today.
And there is a ten% chance of rain Saturday midday for only one hour.
If you’d be so kind to carry a large golfer’s umbrella above me, like caddies at golf events, I will “pledge” to tell no lies for two days.

As for next weekend…long range forecast is for rain and more rain. I’ll probably be there too, wet shoes and drinking hot coffee, to dry from inside out!

On Saturday June 4, I met TomTom at Yates. He was ready to go and had arrived Friday afternoon.
Not only was I late, but I’d left most of my food at home—ooops
It was too late to go back home, so I stopped at El Dorado Camp Store.
Their fried chicken is great, but they were still cooking breakfast. I got a bag of fried pork tenderloins.
We set out on our two day abbreviated figure8 loop.
I was out of breath from the beginning. We stopped at Fat Man’s Camp about an hour and a half south on Uwharrie Trail. There was no way I was going to make it.
I told TomTom how tired I was, and we backpacked only the upper loop. Thanks TomTom!
When we got to the “crossroads” in middle of figure8 loop, a right turn onto Dutchman’s Creek Trail led us to camp at Little Island Creek. That days hike was from 945am til around 3 or 330pm.
Sunday morning chow and coffee, was great.
We started up the big steep mountain with all the boulders (Lick Mountain?) Right then, I knew I was alive, cause I could hear myself breathing.
We stopped at Beech Camp for a break, where Dutchman’s Creek Trail crosses Dutchman’s Creek three times in rapid succession.
Actually I took about a hundred breaks along the way. I’m thinking…are my arteries more clogged than before, and or did the nose cold I got last week cut me down like a farmers hayfield.
We started backpacking on Sunday morning 830am and got back to Yates at 12 noon

TomTom has done several 40 mile hikes. And his experience makes for a pleasant camping trip.

    NC Uwharries Backpacking June 2022

    June 10 11 12 will be a blast
I and possibly others will camp at Yates Friday night
Saturday morning after coffee and chow we will begin our trek in the rain (might not rain)
We should start EARLY possibly before 900 am
If we are able to get a good start with all who want to go communicating first. We don’t want to leave before 900, if you are running late

Forecast says rain stops noon Saturday. Might not rain at all, but if there is rain it’s likely to be only Saturday morning.

My goal is to backpack abbreviated Uwharrie Trail Dutchman’s Creek Trail figure8 loop
If I’m weak as this past weekend, I might elect to only do upper loop.
Even if I fail, any or all are welcome to hike both bottom and top of figure8 loop.
Also if I’m still in weakened condition and trek too slow, feel free to go onward at your usual pace.

I’m going to make further changes to lighten my pack. Fifteen pounds total pack weight goal, is not earth shattering, but pretty good considering much of my gear is oversized. Big hammock, big tarp, and good sized coffee mug.

Please reconfirm your plans in light of some rain Saturday morning. As soon as we are ready to go and all people are accounted for, then we could leave EARLY!

Edit: thanks Raladd, see you then!
