What are under quilt protectors for?

I've seen under quilt protectors mentioned several times in my perusals of the forum, but I'm not entirely sure what they are or what they're for. Is it a raincoat to keep splash up from my UQ?

Thanks much for any brief, and surely remedial, info you can pass on.

Once again, Sir Shug, you have exceeded my expectations for both education and entertainment. I hoped for a few words that might give me some insight and instead now have a genuine understanding. Thank you!

I'm more of a big tarp guy - my HG DCF Winter Palace with doors is my go-to tarp (11' x 10 ft. 4 inches). So I've never seen the reason for a UQP - I'm not doing skimpy tarps. And even if I was into skimpy tarps, I can't see adding a 5 ounce UQP to my kit when I could just have a tarp that had bigger coverage and weighed five ounces more.

Mine is used to block wind, not rain. I've found that on blustery nights the wind robs heat from the underquilt. The underquilt protector is an adjunct to make the underquilt more efficient or to help it do its job. I don't use mine all the time, but do like to have it available if there's a chance of more than normal windy conditions on cold nights.

I use mine to block the wind, stop splash up from rain on my UQ (yes, I am very short so hang closer to the ground than some), and in the VA 80+ summer nights it keeps the skeeters from biting me through my single layer hammocks. I don't mind the extra weight as I am doing base camping with day hikes.

I think some over very over priced in UK and don't have much volume.

Price points and weight penalties are almost a push, between doors vs UQP at least on the HG DCF 11' Hex.

For me I get better coverage using the UQP with the smaller UL tarps. If I use a larger winter type tarp the weight penalty and cost keep spiraling upwards. Prices and weights for UQPs remain the same.

I use mine as a windbreaker and if it helps protect from mist and rain, all the better.

I got mine while I was in Washington on the PCT and happy for any extra warmth I could scrounge. It worked great when paired with my small dyneema tarp.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Since I prefer a large tarp anyway this seems like an accessory I don't really need. Good to know.
