Five Basic Principles of Going Lighter (not me... the great Cam Honan of OZ)
“If everybody is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.” ~ Gen. George S Patton

1lb 6oz - 11' WB Superfly silpoly, with 4x 8' Zing it tieouts, 4x shock cord with mitten hooks for the doors, 2x 15' Zing it ridge tieouts with DW Stingerz, in a 12' mesh sleeve and the WB stuff sack
2 oz - 4x 7.5" Y stakes and stake bag
1lb 8oz - 20F HG Econ Burrow std/std/zipper with stuff sack

WB eldorado with suspension 22.75

Better weight than wisdom, a traveller cannot carry - Viking proverb
Currently, my lightest gear combination for 20* temps is:
DIY 1.6 HyperD 11’x60” Netless GE Hammock..............346g......12.20oz (I'm a big guy and can't really hang with any lighter weight fabric than this)
Suspension: UHMWPE 1” Tree Straps (10’) (pair)...........34g........1.20oz (J-bend directly to hammock CLs)
Hennessey 99”x63” Asym 70D poly Tarp (w/ lines).........267g.......9.42oz (11' on the diagonal; includes split ridgelines and guylines; it's not my favorite but it is my lightest)
UGQ 20* Renegade 950 fill TQ.......................................553g..... 19.51oz (UGQ doesn't make these anymore)
Warbonnet 20* Yeti 850 fill UQ........................................380g.... .13.40oz (partial UQ supplemented with foot insulation noted below)
Foot Insulation/Sit Pad (Grocery Insulation Bag)..............47g........1.66oz (repurposed insulation bag from the grocery store for frozen food)
So that's: 3.59lbs (1627g / 57.39oz) for the bare minimum to get me hanging in the woods at those temps.
Now, to be fair, I won’t necessarily use this particular combination unless I’m trying to be a minimalist. I’ll often use other gear combinations which are slightly heavier (e.g., a tarp with more strength/coverage if snow is forecast; a heavier fabric hammock for less stretch) or I may add some extra items (e.g., whoopie slings; tarp stakes) to make life more comfortable or easier. But none of my gear combinations take me over about 4-1/2 pounds at most.
~ All I want is affordable, simple, ultralight luxury. That’s not asking too much is it?
HG Quest Tarp with tie outs and ridgeline in stuff sack: 16.1 oz
Tarp stakes plus 1 spare + 2 kevlar tree straps in bag : 4.2 oz
Jacks R Better Hudson River top quilt: 22.4 oz
AHE Jarbidge underquilt: 20.4 oz
Hammock – DIY with gear sling attached : 12 oz
optional depending on conditions
- thin-light pad from Mountain Laurel Designs: 2.1 oz
- underquilt protector DIY - 7.3 oz
I would hasten to add that my warmth also depends on what clothing I'm wearing to sleep in, so there's also a base layer, maybe a fleece, perhaps some insulated booties for the feet and so on, not to mention a stocking cap or buff.
"...the height of hammock snobbery!"
Here's my setup:
- Dutchware 11' Chameleon Hexon 1.6 w/no bugnet - 14 oz.
- HG 20° F Phoenix UQ - 16 oz.
- HG Burrow 20° F Burrow TQ - 21 oz.
- HG Camo Hex DCF Tarp w/stakes, cordage - 11.7 oz.
- MyersTech hybrid polyester/dyneema suspension - 4 oz.
Total kit 66.7 oz./4.17 lbs.

Warbonnet BBXLC lightweight DL + suspension: 37 oz
Wooki XL 20: 17.5 oz
HG Burrow 20: 23.95 oz
Tarp and whether I bring an UQP is situational, so I'd say that stuff is anywhere from another 17 to 30 oz.
Total weight: 5.96 to 6.77 lbs
My takeaway from seeing some of the others in this thread is that there's room for improvement in my setup, but I'm still a beginner so I'll hold off until I really know what I want.
