NC - Hot Springs, April/May 2022 -No Go

Sorry folks, no can do. All group sites have been taken for late April and early May. Should have started the booking process earlier. I did not check Easter Weekend as that is normally not a good weekend for most folks to be away from home.

This not to say that other sites on the campground are not available, but they will be individual primitive sites, mostly with no trees.

Thanks Porter, had the same problem trying to get the site(s) I like at North Mills River Recreation Area, will have to wait until the fall.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.

Question: Are most of the group hangs in NC on paid group sites requiring reservations like this one? Just wondering if there aren't more dispersed camping options here. In Colorado, I never paid for camping unless it was in one of the National Parks. Granted, there was a lot more BLM land and national forests there, but just wondering.

Not all hangs are on paid sites, like Yates, John Rock or any of the gorge hangs. Some hangs like the old “Hot Springs” are in interesting locations. For example, Hot Springs hang was within walking distance to town and the hot springs.

NC and Va have lots of areas that are free, but a bit of a challenge when it comes to supporting a group hang with over 20 people. The logistics make it less desirable since most of the hangs are possible due to the efforts of 2 or 3 individuals who take time out of their schedules to put them together.

And just for the record, ALL YOUS GUYS are Rock Stars and I tip my hat to ya’ll!

Hopefully some of the “Old-er” pros will chime in.

Young enough that I didn't participate in the old Hot Springs hangs nor did I ever know RF while he was living...A point of reference on the time line.

I remember typing out a response here, but I must have got distracted, cause it's not here now

    Pretty much what Need2no said.

I may be missing something, if so, y'all add to.
Most group hangs are planned at places that can handle the expected group size and I'm thinking State Parks and camp grounds are the only ones where there is a charge.

The fall and winter hangs at Grason Highlands State Park, VA (GHSP) are a little different.
The one in the fall (late Sept) is always the weekend of the Grayson Highlands Fall Festival.
We do a "Hammock Camping Demo" on Sat, at the festival so they don't charge us for the group camp site. Of course we do have a raffle Sat eve and give the proceeds to Friends Of GHSP, or in a couple cases, we made the donation to the Rugby Volunteer Fire and Rescue, since they put on the Fall Festival and it is their biggest fund raiser of the year.

At the Winter Hang at GHSP Hang, also known as the Winter Mt Rogers Hang, we do pay for the group site, so there is also a raffle. The proceeds are used to pay for a Port A John Hickery has brought in, since the campground bath rooms are closed, along with a big load of firewood (not nearly as big as what Phantom Grappler has delivered at the Yates hang).
The rest of the raffle proceeds go to Friends Of GHSP.
