Noise. Don’t be concerned by outdoor noises they hear in the night. When it is quiet, even a little chipmunk a distance away in the leaves sounds like a large animal about to charge through camp.

If they are able, try out the hammock before going out camping. That way they can learn how to set it up without the pressure of knowing that is their only shelter for the night. Also this will allow them to "dial in" how they want it set up. Such as how high the feet are above the head, the tension on the lines, how they prefer a underquilt/topquilt/sleeping bag set up and how it is attached.

If the hammock has integrated netting, have them set the zipper pulls towards the middle so that they are easy to find by feel.

All good advice above, especially Shug's learning curve video.

May I infer from your question that your friends are also new to camping? Do you plan to hike some distance with a backpack and then camp?

If this is also a backpacking trip and they also have not previously hiked and camped, that will add will add several layers of complexity and angst to the process. So I hope you're car camping in an established area, with an easy exit if that becomes necessary.

If they remain interested in hammocks I'd suggest getting Derick's book The Ultimate Hang. I've read mine so much it's almost falling apart.

An opportunity to help Derick for all his contributions and his great hammock Hang Calculator … if you are buying from Amazon and are a little short to make the Free Shipping bar (currently ≥ $25 purchase), you can add Derick's Illustrated Hammock Basics book for $8.00. If that moves you over the bar to Free Shipping then your total out-of-pocket will be about the same as if you hadn’t included the book but now your have something to lend/give to friends. It contains cute “pirate” illustrations of some of the basics. As a kayaker, I like those.

Note - the Basics book is just that - basics. It is not a repackaging of The Ultimate Hang.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Good suggestion. Ultimate Hang II has so much info that it's overwhelming.

Starting out, people just need a basic, simple setup. And, for some of us, that's where we end up as well.
