Lightbulb What advice should I give to newbies

This weekend I'm taking a couple of newbies hammock camping in the Netherlands. It will be their first time sleeping in a hammock. I have full kits for them (hammock, UQ, tarp, suspension etc).

What is the best piece of advice that I should not forget to tell them?

Set under quilt so that when it is attached, then pulled to front side of hammock. This way it is side by side or parallel to hammock.

Adjust under quilt suspension so bottom of under quilt is about 6 inches higher than than bottom of hammock, along its entire length.

Then when you slide under quilt back under empty hammock, it will lift hammock a bit.

They can get in hammock, and you can adjust short end shock cords for least amount of air gap.

My apologies to you and them, if they already know all these insulation details

    Mainly have fun

Avoid sitting down in under quilt rather than hammock. I’ve done that a few times.

Get a good diagonal lay, if hammock is long enough

Mainly have fun, and realize, first night in hammock does not sleep as good as second third and forth nights.

    Have fun!

Seriously, proper food and hydration, proper bed-time clothing, and all that stuff noted above.

You might let them know that the first night out could feel strange. Their muscles are used to sleeping on a bed (or ground) and it might take a night or two for them to “relearn” they can relax and everything is supported. I always feel a little more “aware” the first night when in a new location - even visiting someone’s home - new lights, new sounds. So they should at least give the hammock two nights before making judgement. And if they weren’t comfortable the first night, discuss why. Because sometimes only a little adjustment is needed. And some things seem backwards. Like for me, the pillow goes down by my feet (under a knee), not up at my head. The GE itself supports my head and a pillow can tilt my head too much.

If the UQ’s have a differential cut (like Hammock Gear’s) make sure they are up tight agains the bottom of the hammock. Shug has a video that suggests the a properly fitted UQ should lift the hammock bottom several inches when the hammock is empty.

Have them practice getting in/out several times before they have to get in/out - especially in the dark, when they are sleepy, and on uneven/unfamiliar ground. In that same vain, set the hammock at a height so they can easily pivot their legs out, set there feet on the ground, and just stand up.

If they are using sleeping bags, either open them and use them like a TQ, or advise getting into them standing next to the hammock, then sitting down and bringing their legs and sleeping bag in rather than try to enter a regular sleeping bag while already in the hammock - though that would provide some entertainment.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

+1 to cougarmeat. If I haven't been camping in a while, the first night is always a relearning period, but the second night is pure bliss. As long as they are warm and comfortable, all the rest will work out.

    Best to you!
There is a skinny healthy guy inside me screaming to get out, but I can usually shut him up with a dozen Boston Creams from Dunkin Donuts.
