First Snow Hang in the WNC Mountains

I’m on fifty acres here and my son and I took a walk into our woods to set up for a quick overnight in anticipation of the snow. It hovered around 24 degrees for most of the night and began dropping wet flakes around midnight. My gear held up flawlessly, but my son sought refuge with his mother in the house when he got cold and decided to FaceTime me to share in the experience instead of hang He’s only six so I was happy he stuck around with me as long as he did.

The challenges of wind and weight of snow is a unique experience. Minor adjustments to my tarp and a few swigs of bourbon made for an enjoyable time overall. Highly recommend my fellow hangers make time for a snow hang, even if it’s just in the back yard!

I’ll be doing the same tonight. Jealous of your proximity to Nantahala. I’m closer to Pisgah which always feels busier to me.

6 yr old start out in the hammock with you? Haven’t yet tested if the 3.5 yr old (or me) can get any sleep like that.

It does always seem like Pisgah is full of people. The close proximity to Asheville is likely the cause. Not as many trail options in the Nantahala, but you’re just about guaranteed solitude everywhere you go other than around the NOC on the AT.

We didn’t start out in the hammock, but he’s been sleeping in there with me for a few years. We’ve never really had an issue with sleep until recently. He’s too big to not be in his own hammock now. At 3.5 years old, I doubt you’d have any issues. Just be sure you get situated first before they climb in. They’ll find a comfortable spot and be asleep before you if my experience is any indication.

Sounds like a successful experiment. Was there snow already on the ground or was that from the wind blowing it under the tarp? The winds were ridiculous near me, so I wouldn't be surprised if so.

Not often here you get that combination of high wind and temp in your yard to try stuff out.

Less exciting last night. Down in the low teens but no wind.

No snow prior to setting up. We got some of those same winds and it blew snow under my setup.

He’ll stick it out in the spring time for sure. Did you make it back from LA in time for this last bit of snow?

Made it with time to spare. We only got about 2 inches.
