    Bartram Trail: Low of 22F

Hey y'all, here's a few photos from a section of the Bartram trail in Georgia. I had originally planned to do the Jack's River Trail, but that just wasn't going to happen at these temperatures (forecast lows were in the upper teens in the Cohutta). At 4 am of the day of the hike, I called the audible to go on a trail with fewer creek crossings. Still, this represents the coldest night I've spent in a hammock and boy was it a windy one (glad I brought the UQP and big tarp even with no rain in the forecast). I was admirably warm considering the 20* ratings on my Hammock Gear Burrow and Wooki XL. I probably could've extended down another 5-10 degrees and been comfortable before having to add on top of my base layers. Enough with the yapping, here's the pictures:

I should've left the fishing gear at home to save some pack weight. It was too cold, the trail didn't have many fishable stretches in this section, and I didn't even spook a fish in the hour I did fish.

Looks like a great winter trip. Great to see such beautiful scenery from Georgia. Been a long time since I have had the pleasure to be in them woods. Kudos on the successful gear test!

    Best to you!
There is a skinny healthy guy inside me screaming to get out, but I can usually shut him up with a dozen Boston Creams from Dunkin Donuts.

I’m jealous, no snow and those would be balmy night temps where I’m from. Lol it’s all relative. But good on you for your adventure and nice pics.

Nice that you hit a new low for yourself. It is satisfying.
Can't wait to hike snow-less in Spring. Ready to get South and tussle with the rhodo.

Hey, I would recognize that powerline cut anywhere! Great view from Pinnacle Knob, did you camp up there? It was an absolute gorgeous but chilly weekend in north Georgia. We spent the weekend day hiking on the Duncan Ridge Trail and car camping. I know that it all depends on the individual and I tend to sleep pretty warm, but I have come to trust the temperature ratings of my quilts from several different vendors. I was toasty warm in my 20 degree Wooki and LLG top quilt this weekend.

I see I wasn't the only one out there hiking in shorts this weekend. My friend Dee looks like she is cold for some reason...

Looks like a good trip & your gear selection worked for you.

I grew up in north AL & my father, brothers & I backpacked in the Cohutta and along the Jacks River many times during those years. We usually camped just up from the falls and back then, there was never anybody out there but us. LOTS of crossings along the Jacks too, as I recall.

I'd been planning to camp up there, but it was just too windy so it ended up being our lunch stop where I put on my wind pants and rain jacket as a windbreaker then headed down to the big campsite at the base of Martin creek falls. It made a nice short hike to warwoman dell the next morning.

The shorts are key. I'll take the additional range of motion over a little warmer calves any day, but, based on what everyone else I saw on the trail was wearing, I thought I was alone in that regard. Glad to see I've got good company.

Yeah, I don't think I'd survive at the temps I see others post about. I'd look like that scene in cool runnings where they leave the airport.

Your videos do make me want to try a snow trip for myself. It's looking like that will have to be next year, though, with the type of winter we're having.

The rhodo almost caused an incident on this hike as a branch got caught on my pack, but luckily I shouted a warning in time for the wife to duck out of the way and not get smacked by it.
