    DIY UQP

to make an UQP, does the material have to be calendared?
i realize it needs to be breathable, but is calendared necessary?

My first homemade one was from ballistic nylon. Worked fine.
I still use it as a brush guard or gear hammock. Bit sturdy compared to argon 97 so great for places with high grass or possibly using as a ground cloth.

Not as windproof as calendered nylon though. Definitely needed water protection spray, not an issue with my calendared fabric ones.

It's the preferred fabric for a reason. There are plenty of other choices made by different companies and people though.

You can use sil poly if it loose and has some airflow.
Breathable is less important than a way for moisture to escape. I do not snug my UQP to my underquilt. I have it loose enough it doesn't touch my UQ on the bottom.

Since the primary purpose of my UQP was to block wind, and since calendared material does that better than uncalendared, for me the answer to that question is a yes.

+1 to the above responses. Calendared blocks the wind better than non-calendared.
