Big A** Tarp Tent plans - need some suggestions

digging back though the forums and came across this thread from Sept 2018 about a prototype of a hot tent tarp.

Raleigh NC rarely ever gets so cold that I would need to have a stove, but having something this big for camping with the scouts in the winter would be great for next November (2023)

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...0%9D-Prototype

thinking that the ridgeline about 6' tall, with the base of one side of 3' from the peak going straight to the ground and the other side 5' with a 3' side wall. 12 ridgeline length

very early stages, but plan on using Ripstopbytheroll 1.6 silpoly

any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

My only thought at the outset is that some silpoly is pretty stretchy. I used the "membrane" silpoly for a tarp and the fabric is actually quite stretchy, which makes a taut pitch difficult. Here is a waterproof fabric comparison chart from RSBTR: https://ripstopbytheroll.zendesk.com...mparison-Chart

In your shoes I would probably order samples of all the silpolys to find the least stretchy one.

I don't have much other advice -- looks like a really incredible project!
I have sewn my own: Backpack, hammock, bugnet, tarp, "Costco" top quilt with faux baffles, and Costco underquilt with "clew" suspension.

November 2023? Man, I can't think of a single thing I've planned a year and a half in advance.

I made a winter SP tarp with 1.6, it was really slippery to sew but I’m really happy with it. It’s important to know which side of the fabric is the outside as it’s not as apparent as other fabrics. I used a thicker “outdoor” poly thread and a non slip needle. I’ve never had any issues getting it taught. This is my complete myog setup. I bought these little fabric clips instead of using pins which have been a huge help to keep my hems relatively straight.

    Prepare to make mistakes.
I made three first time I made tarps. First was sloppy and bad. The third one was right on it.
Practice sewing long and straight. Get to know your thread injector. Especially bobbin and thread tension.
    Breathe.

Hi Ken, I grew up in Northern Alabama with the Scouts. You are a bit North of me. We both get snow and the real killer is Southern humidity.
I live in Colorado now. When someone says it's a dry cold here they mean it. Colorado is a piece of cake compared to February in North Alabama.
