Video: Hot Tenting the Huron National Forest, Michigan

Only one more hot tent trip after this (next weekend). It has been a terrific winter so far and I've had some great trips. This one was no exception.

I ran my mouth a bit much in this one...I guess some of that has to do with how I assembled it. Still some work to do.

The temps were perfect and the DIY sink stove performed well on its second outing.

    Looks cozy! Couple of questions....

How do you stop it from turning the ground into a muddy mess? In the video, its clear of snow in there but I assume it wasn't when you set up the tent. Do you prep the ground ahead of time, or is it warm enough in there to dry out in a few hours?

I have a small collapsible shovel which is enough to "scrape" the ground 90% clean of snow. Just sort of squat, put the shovel between by feet and throw it to the side. It only takes a few minutes.

After a couple hours of burning it really starts to get cleaned up and finally dry out in some areas. If you're lucky to be under pines, it's nice and clean ground. If in an area of oak, maple, etc, it's always a bit dirty but not a muddy mess. Some of that has to do with the sandy soil in Michigan. If I did this in Indiana it would probably be like setting up over a pig pen. You would think setting up some kind of rug or carpet would help, but that just makes things worse.

It's also nice to get that heated pine aroma!

Those look like nice wool pants you had on. What are they? Do you like them?

Really great video. The chain saw problem sounds as if you are getting too much gas. If you turn the low in just a bit, it should be okay.

Thanks Carver, that happened to be the issue! I bought an adjustment tool and tweaked it. Running great now, much quicker response when pulling the trigger.

That's okay as we like it quiet over here and not being over run with tourists. Hammock campers are welcomed as they are quiet and respect the woods.
