    Dutch mantis hardware and whoopies

I’ve made up some Dutchware spiderchain tree huggers and I’m wondering if I can replace my biners with the mantis clips. Worried the whoopie slings will bind in them when making adjustments.

I tried spiders for this on regular polyester straps and the whoopies bind and drag the spider sideways.

Can’t seem to find a thread of anyone trying this way. Seems most using daisys are just clipping CL to a longer strap.

Using mantis would bring the whole suspension to ~3.85oz

I suspect you are correct about the binding issue.

Anytime the cord goes 'around a corner' and changes direction, friction is induced. More if the corner has a small radius. When you look at a pic of the Mantis, the cord goes around 4 tightly-radiused corners and changes direction twice. BUT, maybe someone has actually used your proposed configuration and can attest otherwise.

I tried mantis clips and found they were a pain to work with getting them through the daisy chain loops so I stuck with my Warbonnet beaners. I do like the flexibility of the daisy chains and whoopies though and if I am tight in the trees, it’s just as easy going directly to the daisy chain

Did your whoopie slings adjust smoothly over the mantis hardware?

I considered the mantis clips, but as stated above, you have multiple angles and added friction from the clips vs a biner. You could always use a soft shackle if you find biners offensive.

It’s funny. As much as I want to embrace the Bling hardware, real life experience reminds me that ease-of-use trumps new-and-shinny. For example, I have that little Dutch Hook on my 1.75mm tarp ridgeline. But that hook is a little fight to get on/off the line. In another set, I removed the wire gate from a metal mitten clip - turning into a slightly larger hook. Works great. Because the friction of the tree is primarily holding the line, the hook itself has light duty.

I’ve used daisy chain and those small WarBonnet carabiners for a long time. I’ve been using Dutch Clips on the tree end of the daisy chain, but I could use Evo Loops instead. Or, amazing but true - just feed the daisy chain through its own loop. But, you know, there will always be a branch just when you need to raise the tree loop a tad. So nice to just unclip/unhook it and reset.

With respect to Special Agent Moulder, I may not have a USA passport but I’ve ridden in a ’56 Chevy and been laid off by Boeing (a Pacific NorthWest joke).

I know what you mean. I feel like Im going to slowly amass a large pile of tiny, imperceptibly light little gadgets to give out as presents.

For example.....I placed the order for a pair of mantis...ee? Mantisi?, mantisesess, manatees this morning. I think this Dutch feller might have really dialed in to the kind of crazy most of us are.....

I did the reverse, the fixed loop of the whoopies over the mantis clips and the adjustable part of the whoopie I attached to my hammock continuous loop using a Dutch biner

Gotcha. I do like the idea of easily detaching the hammock under the tarp like that.

Initial impressions to come when I have a minute to mess with em. Out of the package the fit and finish are stellar.
