Tensahedron Stand and larger (11-12 ft) hammocks - What works for you?

    Good morning!

I recently picked up a couple of SLD Trail Lairs (11 ft. and 12 ft. models) and wanted to get some advice on how folks are setting these up on a tensahedron-style stand. If you have a DIY stand or a Tensa4, how are you dialing it in with an 11 ft. or 12 ft. gathered end hammock? Do you connect directly to the stand or use suspension? Do you spread the feet out a certain distance? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Tensa4 poles are 100” and accommodate 12’ers with no suspension, and 11’ers with minimal suspension.

I have several kinds of stands. Make a new one every so often when I am thinking about something.

It depends on how big the stand is to be honest on how I attached it.

For something made with 8 ft long uprights I just connect a continuous loop and use the straddle, the width between the two pieces touching the ground, to adjust height off the ground. I lengthen or shorten the cable anchoring the foot to adjust my hang.

I have a large I take camping that is designed for my winter tarp to perfectly enclose. That gives it a 13 ft Ridgeline minimum.

For that one I use whoopie slings.

I also try to buy as myself is for towards the foot in this possible. I like some safety on my balance not just to be perfectly centered.

IMG_4362.jpg This is my 12 foot trail lair with my tensahedron stand. I don't have to have any suspension to put it on there. I just carabiner the continuous loop on each end to the stand and it fits.

Thanks! To adjust the height (and prevent a bruised backside if I fall) I spread the feet out, correct?

Spreading feet lowers. But poles are stronger when they can be more upright, so it’s generally best to widen only as much as necessary to assure ample head and foot clearance as you lay on diagonal, letting out the suspension as the primary way to lower.

Worst of all cases from a strength POV is when people’s suspension is too short or absent (with too short a hammock) causing the ridgeline to sag, so they tighten both guylines to get the hangle right, but then hammock is too high, so they widen the base to lower, and then they re-tension guylines. This can easily double the stress on the poles for same weight in hammock. Head guyline should remain slack…
