Impromptu Winter Overnight in Rhode Island

I did a quick overnight this weekend near my house to test out my winter gear. Temps swung a bit, going from 28°F to a low of 14°F before rebounding to lower 20s by morning. My main reason for the trip was to test my new Winterdream 12 tarp before I take it up to the White Mountains next weekend. I must say, the thing is great! Certainly a big upgrade from my Hennessey Hex Fly that I've been using the past 3.5 years. Those side pullouts allow for much more room and the doors should work well to combat weather. It's always a learning experience camping in the cold (or any condition really) but I was happy with how I managed my heat. The biggest problem is going to bed so early! I end up sleeping for a few hours, wake up when I'd normally go to bed and then finally drift off again in the early hours of the night. But I woke up at 4:30 a bit cool but not cold which is all that matters as far as I'm concerned. Shot the following video of the trip if you care to watch:

I hear you on the going to bed too early. I get a power nap in and wake up refreshed and it's before midnight!!! Takes a few hours to feel tired again.

You could always get up, smack a branch against a tree a whoop for a susquatch. :P

    Nice video.

The new tarp looks like it should handle the elements on your trip.

Good little trip! I love those quick, easy shakedowns to make sure gear selections are good.

I did one with MikekiM the same time frame (Jan 8-9) in Harriman State Park with identical weather conditions. Getting ready to do a 3-night trip to Pharaoh Wilderness with Dirtbaghiker. It was good to finally feel the crunch of snow underfoot, even it it was only a few inches.

I know, it was nice camping in the snow - and it's already gone. The following day it was 40° and rainy and that was that. It's currently in the teens here and it's going to be frigid in the Whites this weekend so that may change our plans some.

And maybe more snow on the way! We're going Jan 20-23.

Hope you have a great trip.

Our plans fell apart due to the cold unfortunately. I did get out for a night this past weekend to test out the tarp in stormy conditions so look for that one soon!
