I’m on my second ridge runner, both are double layer. I never use a pad, I get double layer for the strength factor. I don’t ever carry them far, so weight is no issue.

I've tested a pad with my People's Bridge Hammock and found that it stays in place very well - no need for a double layer, as with GE hammocks. I expect other bridge designs may also work okay. Decisions about layers come down to pack weight and strength. Two layers of 1.1 weigh more than a single 1.9.
I have a double layer ridge runner. Sometimes I use an under quilt and sometimes use an air mattress. I really like having the option to use either. I mostly use the air mattress on warm summer days while napping in the back yard, (very comfortable).
