    Sargeant Innovations

Years ago, a hammock innovator who had the 'Sargent name in his trail name used to have several posts about hammock suspension and insulation developments. Has anyone seen or heard any new innovations from him?

Probably SGT Rock. He disappeared for a few years then reappeared around 2015, before disappearing again. I haven't heard from him since. He does have a website but it doesn't appear to be maintained.

Two decades ago I stumbled on to his website and discovered hammocking. Especially Hennessy hammocks. That started me down that rabbits hole. I’m grateful to Sgt. Rock for this.

Yes, Sergeant Rock. Just wondered if anyone had heard if he was still creating new suspensions or innovations.

SGT Rock made some great YouTube videos showing his ultralight hammocks, suspensions, and insulation. He was a great innovator. I’m not sure if he got mad at various platforms, or if they got mad at him

He would showcase his latest lightest rig. And right before he would trust his weight to his hammock, he’d say
    “I’m gonna die!”

Very entertaining! His hammock would be a few inches off ground at its lowest point. He would take great care to get into his hammock, very slowly, in hopes of not breaking his wispy suspension and hammock.

No telling, how light he could get his total pack weight down to, with all the advancements in lighter materials for hammocks, suspensions, insulation, and packs.

In his younger days he was an infantryman in US army. They did long marches with packs that weighed between 50 and 100 pounds, depending on the mission. He said, now that he had retired from the Army, he wasn’t going to carry a heavy pack.

He weighed all his gear, not in pounds or ounces, but in grams.

I think one of his videos featured a hammock suspension made of Zingit!

    “I’m gonna die!”

Zingit is pretty strong, but I wouldn't trust it in the long haul. Sgt Rock is a careful innovator, and I'd trust whatever he says about hanging or trails. His equipment reviews and trail reports are of a piece. That is, he doesn't review something before putting in miles and miles with it - the voice of experience, tempered with a little irony.

I'm way too new of a member to know about SGT Rock, but I really like Jeff Myers's channel on YT, he has all sorts of ideas about suspension and sells on eBay and Etsy, I believe.

My hammock suspension has 1/8 amsteel continuous loops and 1/8 amsteel hammock ridgeline. I don’t have an ultralight rig. I still found SGT Rock to be entertaining, informative, and innovative.
If I’m backpacking, I try cutting back weight in other areas. One of my friends, who has a low pack weight, has started monitoring the amount of extra food he brings back at the end of trips. This extra food is carried all weekend. He is working on more accurate projections of what he eats, compared to what he has in his pack.

SGT Rock, wherever you are, thanks for being an innovative hammock camper.
