Anyone with a BLACKBIRD XLC WINTER TOP COVER? Share your thoughts

Hey guys - Happy Healthy Holidays, I am literally hanging in my XLC with my Thunderfly - it's 21 degrees and I am toasty. I have been kicking around the idea of getting the winter top cover. It'll eliminate having to sometimes rig my tarp. Just wanted to hear some thoughts from people that have purchased and used. Also... what color did you go with? I'm thinking that lighter shades would allow some light in when the moon is high and when it's getting dark and you are getting situated. Thanks

Over the years I have had Brandon at Warbonnet custom make me two different XLC hammocks with a sewn on solid silnylon top rather than a bug net top with just a zipper on one side. One is a 1.7 single with a 1.1 solid cover top. The other is a 1.1 single with a 1.1 sewn on top. I am a gram weenie backpacker and am below 140 lbs myself, so the latter 1.1 version XLC has been my main go-to hammock for quite a few years.

Since I mainly backpack in the cascades at elevation, I have never had a problem with them being too warm. If so, I just unzip the top cover a bit for ventilation unless the bugs are real bad. Also, I have only had condensation one time when it got down below 20*. Other that that I love that configuration. I also have an 11' travel sock from Warbonnet, but I mainly use it with my Dutch 11' netless in cold or buggy weather. But I like the integrated top much better. I am sure a detachable top will have the same characteristics. I hope this helps.

I love mine. Mine is green. Adds several degrees too. I went with a darker color in case I need to sleep in a bit.

I have a winter cover for my Eldorado (XLC cover minus the shelf) in the bushwack shadow pine camo. Love it. Works great, easy to deal with, adds some degrees of warmth. I haven't had any issues with condensation.

Adding another post to this thread. I got my Grey Blackbird XLC winter top cover. Installed easily. It is GREAT! I am also very happy with a feature that I didn't realize was so nice. The side "window" or screen section isn't just a foot long section as it appears in the photos. Maybe I'm blind. But it is much longer and it gives you lots of fresh air and also allows you to see a lot of area. Great Job WBO
*Actually heading out now to sleep out. Western PA - 23 degrees!

I've heard folks have had issues with condensation with the winter top cover....but perhaps it's unavoidable.

This last Saturday I was in my WBBB XLC with the winter top cover. It did keep the heat in but in the morning I woke up to a solid coat of ice on the entire underside of the top cover. The temperature was 27 F. As the morning warmed I was still in the hammock and the condensation/ice began to warm and drip onto my down top quilt. Time to get up!!!!
