    OR down beanie question

I bought an Outdoor Research down beanie last year. Unfortunately the elastic straps are uncomfortable. There is one around the bottom edge in back and one maybe an inch higher in front. I have the L/XL size and I have to pull it all the way down to get the elastic under my ears but it slowly rides up and ends up on my ears which is uncomfortable and sometimes even painful. If I turn it around the elastic is on my ears right away so that isn't a solution. I was wondering if anyone has experience with both the OR and something like the UGQ skully and if you find the UGQ to be more comfortable.

Is it possible to turn it inside out so the elastic is on the outside.

I tried turning it inside out and the pressure from the elastic is the same. When looking at it I realized the front doesn't have elastic, it is just stitching.. Maybe it's just to small for my melon.

No experience with the OR down beanie but have used a Black Rock down beanie for several seasons. I still use it occasionally but experienced a similar thing where the nylon material is so slick it wouldn't stay put, so I was regularly readjusting it. Don't know what you think about wool but, I've been extremely pleased with my Alpaca wool beanie from Appalachian Gear. Awesome beanie, super comfy & once it's on, it stays put. Love it.

The alpaca wool beanie looks nice. Looks like it's a little warmer than merino wool. Thanks for the tip.

    OR down beanie question

I’ve heard this complaint about the OR beanie before. A few have returned it because of this. I went with a black rock down hat and love it. Very warm.

Funny someone should mention alpaca. I went to a store today and the wife talked me into an alpaca beanie very similar to the one mentioned above. A but pricey at $34 but it seems pretty comfy. It doesn’t seem super warm to me. Local Cottage vendor.

The blackrock was a splurge too (apparently I love hats) but glad I picked that over the OR brand one.

Same here. I love my 2 BlackRock down hats. I have a black one and orange one that I wear during hunting season. These are expensive but they are also very comfortable and warm.

I'm curious. I've never worn a down beanie but I would think that they would become very hot with physical activity. Or maybe you just wear them in extremely cold conditions. Any opinions?

It’s a little puzzling as a nighttime garment because you compress it by lying on it. A down hood still covers on the sides and under the chin. A light balaclava works for me. Just that close layer is enough - no need for loft.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
