In extreme cold they are great. Of course if you are doing a lot of physical activity you will get hot and anything. Similar to a down coat or with layers you just Remove or vent it for a few seconds if needed. But for standing around or walking Im low temps the down beanie is great.

As for it compressing in the hammock…yes it will compress that side but you have the UQ there to protect the back of your head. And the loft on the other sides still keeps you comfy and warm.

It makes sense to me as a sleeping beanie. Keeping the head warm is important. But when you're out and about and not sleeping, does anyone wear one?

dtp2c111, I didn't see your post when I replied above. I've just never even seen a down beanie. Thanks.

I pretty much always wear a light beanie under my BR Down hats. I add it when it gets to freezing. Really warm and light and love it. Wear it sleeping in Winter with my down hood and other head accoutrement.

I also normally use my BlackRock beanie to layer over another cap or balaclava (or both depending on the temperature). I really like by Carhartt acrylic cap. It is my goto for snowblowing or working outside and as a base layer under my down beanie. If you really want to be warm in winter, think Carhartt. If you want light gear, don't think Carhartt. ;-)
