My dutchwear wide hammock got basically destroyed by wind :-/

I bought a dutchwear hammock at the beginning of summer and my goal was to live a year outside in my hammock.

    https://dutchwaregear.com/product/tw...on-tarp/#color

LOVE this hammock as it's really huge and has plenty of space.

However, I think the wind hated it as last night when I came back to the tent it was totally destroyed.

I don't think it's the fault of the hammock really, I was camping on the top of the mountain and the wind was pretty high yesterday while I was in town.

I think the problem is that it's open on one end and essentially forms a kite.

I think the only REAL way to solve this could be with doors so that the tarp is completely blocked form the wind. It would keep me warmer too.

Wrapping the hammock with some straps or snakes to keep it from opening up is what I do. I don't doubt high winds destroyed it after a full day.

We get some high winds off the gulf when we’re beach campin and I’ve seen my hammock get rocked too. Tied it up and saved it. At least they’re not too expensive and they’re readily available.

    Sorry to hear that.

I have pulled the hammock taught to the ridgeline by grabbing it in the middle and giving it sort of a twist and then tieing it there.

Easier to understand if you see it, but it takes only a few seconds to do.

    Wind is then no problem.

burtonator, I’m sorry for your loss.

You can get a skin for your hammock or maybe use those elastic hair loops, or even a length of guy line to hold the hammock secure in a bundle - like a tarp in a snake skin - while you are away. the Bliss Sun Shield might even be large enough to corral both the hammock and one quilt - maybe more if they are not puffy 0° rated.

There’s a reason why every “hammock camping” book I’ve read suggests setup up BELOW a geological high point, preferably on the Lee side.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I've also thrown all my gear in the hammock and wrapped it with my spare tarp ridgeline. It must have sucked to come back to that scene.

I spend most of my time where wind and sun are more common than rain, so my first concern was how to deal w/ wind while away from camp.
Because of that I had Jared from SLD make us some of his "catch-alls" in a waterproof material.
When we leave camp both my tarp and my hammock w/ quilts are skinned.
Probably one of the best purchases I made in the early days.
