Video: Solo Hot Tenting Northern Michigan

I recently lost my smell and taste, had a cough, stuffy/runny head, headache, and pain in chest so work obviously didn't want me around. I ultimately tested negative for big bad Rona, but decided to pass the waiting time in style up north.

Just a few days earlier, I put a new stove jack on the side of my tent and was eager to test this. I was getting too many burn holes in the roof. I will now patch the roof jack since I'll never use it again and want to get rid of that ugly mess. Unfortunately the gray nylon material I need to match is out of stock, so I made a quick mismatch patch to velcro onto the existing spot for now.

I thoroughly enjoyed the nice wintry weather, decent food and great sleep!

Looks comfy. That was a lot of wood... and I didn't know they made nice little chainsaws like that... Perfect!

Very hard to find the mini chainsaw. It fits in my 20" tote perfectly, which fits on my toboggan perfectly, so it's like a puzzle. I thought about getting another just to future-proof things. I'd buy an 8" if they made one.

Dang! Hot tent camping looks like a lot of work! JK.

Looks like a fun & casual outing, although there's always a lot to do around camp with chores & such, just to get a few minutes to relax. Cutting all that wood would've been quite a workout without your little chainsaw. Your stove setup is pretty slick too & the stove pipe mod looks like it works. Beans in chili??? What the...? Thanks for posting.

Oh yeah, love the camp slippers!

Actually that chain saw is an efficient setup. Good sharp chain and the 10" bar size doesn't really matter since 4-6" diameter is all I ever need. Gotta have that to fit in my tote box especially when pulling the toboggan. I never refilled the tank and got an overabundance of wood with probably only a dozen cuts. The majority of the work was splitting, but you can probably see in the video even that was a breeze. Love that Fiskars X17!

It is work! Sometimes the day before heading out I don't even feel like going LOL. Mostly joking there.

I like chili in my beans!

    Thanks for watching!

Looks like a fun trip. I'd like to try something along those lines, but I have to travel to get to a winter spot. Then there's the gear that I don't have. After watching your video, I went down the rabbit hole of hot tent/tarps and stoves. Oof.

It's a rabbit hole for sure! A big, deep, dark, inescapable hole.

I just received materials to make my own. Under $300 for everything, but an astronomical labor value. I'll take my time and try not to rush it.

Looks Cozy. What area of northern Mi were ya? I bought a battery powered chainsaw for car camping, to keep noise down, and absolutely love it. I now take it to work with me vs my gas saw. Thanks for the Vid.

This was a little west of Grayling. I had a Dewalt electric in my amazon cart for about a year...debating over and over. I decided to pass since I was worried about having it out in the cold for 3-5 days at a time. But it would have been OK with the small amount of cutting I do, usually. It wouldn't have fit well on my toboggan anyway which was a big consideration. Speaking of noise, just a reminder to always wear ear plugs with these small engines; they blow your hearing out even if you think it's not "painfully" loud.

That Wagner ware iron has an excellent seasoning on it. Is that a daily use skillet or just for camping?

Was the HT a 2 meter? It looked like a Motorola.

Just today I was mapping out locations in the Pere Marquette Forest. I’ve never camped in it but I have to go exploring there next season.

Thanks for sharing a few days out in the woods with us.
