Thread: Plastic Toggles

    Plastic Toggles

I have searched "plastic", "toggles" and "plastic toggles" and still can't find out what they are made from or where one gets the plastic toggles to hang a tarp from (with continuous ridgeline and prusik knots).

Any thoughts? Maybe I am using the wrong term?

I am interested in making them myself.

    Thanks.

Opie is/was selling them. I believe his are made from Delrin rods, which should be available at McMaster-Carr, among other places.

If you have no specific requirement for plastic, you may find bamboo (or another wood) to be preferable (I certainly do). In any case, strength:weight is generally significantly higher, especially for bamboo.

Such natural materials can also be acquired freely, are easy to work, and remain biodegradable.

Or try some arrow shaft cutoffs; a waste product, easy to find at hunting stores.

I cut mine from a heavy duty plastic clothes hanger. I think they came three for a dollar at Dollar General and I cut 14 toggles from one hanger.

I do have some Delrin Rod.... Ive found its a little denser then the High Density Polyethylene, or HDPE, that I use now. Both work, and both are about the same weight.

I do and would prefer to use aluminum because it is lighter. There is a bit more work involved in getting the holes smoothed out so they dont abrade the line running through it. Not so much an issue for MSH toggles, but the tarp toggles do get some tension on them. The Arrow shaft I use for MSH toggles is Easton Gamegetter in either the XX75 or XX78. Sizes vary between 400 and 2317. The Digi toggles are 2514. The toggles I use for WB tarps are Easton Scout Arrows. I believe they are a 1620, or thereabouts.

Now there's a guy who's more interested in serving this community than making a buck! I always appreciate vendors who are clear about the technical sides of their products - instead of "toggles", we hear exactly what they're made from, weights, and pros/cons.

    Gotta love Opie.

Has anyone tried to drill a hole large enough for some small silicone tubing to fit inside the hole? It might help with abrasion.
