I use the same TW/Burrow combo of 20 deg TW and 40 deg Burrow. It has worked well for me in everything I’ve camped in from 20 to 80 degrees.

TW is my favorite, but I do love the way down just warms you like nature intended with all natural insulation that has evolved over hundreds of millions of years! . I like having both depending on the conditions to use either or both and have not been lacking yet. Good luck.

I also have a combo w/ a 20° TW and a 40°, short, down LL that I can put on the outside of the TW if I need it.
I'm less concerned w/ crushing the loft w/ the down on the outside. Sometimes I might add a UQP over the whole thing if weather is bad.

The short, summer time 40° just adds a layer where I'd need it most.

If I had to pick just one, I’d pick a 20° (with maybe a little overstuff) because of the night time temps around HERE. Then for day hikes, in the heat of the summer, I’d probably sandwich some ReflexIt between a SL hammock and UQP. Not experiencing CA’s desert environment, I figure things are warmer. I’m remembering times in Big Sur and kayak surfing in Laguna Beach. I suggested a 40° rig because when I think “California” I remember women rollerskating in bikinis in Huntington Beach. Just determine where you will be adventuring most of the time, look at the historical temperatures in the seasons you’ll be out and determine what works for you. For example, I’m easily comfortable with a 10° cushion - like a 20° quilt down to the 30’s or high 20’s. A balaclava for your head helps a lot.

But will all these climate changes, who knows. Around here, yesterday was 72° - in December !!!. I think it is nature’s way of wagging a “Tsk, tsk” finger at the greed of the ski mountain managers. This year, if you have the funds to pay an extra $50 (a day), you can cut in front of everyone else in the lift line. Can’t see anything going wrong with that idea … They usually open around ThanksGiving but this year, maybe January; maybe.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
