    Greetings from Sweden

    This summer me and my wife decided to try out hammocking, mostly as a fun way to get the kids to join us outdoors.
    No one knew I'd be the only one really hooked

    We started out with 2 cheap 9 ft hammock with built in mosquito nets complete with suspension and tarps.

    It wasn't very comfortable and my knees hurt, but as i really liked the idea of hanging free instead of being confined to the ground in a tent, I started googling and quickly found hammockforums.net.

    I've been lurking here ever since, and I've probably read hundreds of threads.

    About two weeks ago I finished my first DIY double layer hammock!
    It's been about 30 years since last time I used a sewing machine and while the sewing of a simple gathered end hammock isn't exactly rocket science, I am immensely proud of myself now

    Also, splicing dyneema is fun. Never did that before and now I have my own home made continuous loops, adjustable structural ridgeline and whoopie slings.

    I did something wrong while measuring the hammock fabric so it came out just a bit over 10 ft, but it's still a lot more comfortable than my previous one. I'll use it as an excuse to buy more fabric and do some more sewing...

    Next step is to make a bug net before the little buggers wake up after winter. I will also have to get a bigger tarp as the old cheap ones are too small.

    Lastly I'd just like to say a big thank you to everyone here, the knowledge and experience people share here is invaluable to get going with hammocking.

    I've actually invested in a measuring tape with feet and inches so I don't have to translate to metric units in my head all the time

    My current "project" is trying to figure out how well all those small gadgets such as whoopie hooks, buckles etc. will work for a big guy like me, 285 lbs.

    So I'll keep enjoying hammockforums.net!

    //Peter

    Welcome! I'd never thought of making my own double layer hammock... That's quite the feat! If you're going to do another, what changes would you make?
    Be safe, have fun, and make some memories!

    I would take extra care when measuring to make sure I would get the right length when finished. I would also consider how much fabric is used in the end gathering, for the same reason
    I would probably also install stretchy sides (knotty mod) and possibly some side tie outs in case I want them. Should be easy enough to make after finishing the hammock though.
