VIDEO: Cold Hammock Camping in the White Mountains on the Kilkenny Ridge

Had a great time hiking recently with a friend up in the White Mountains. The foliage was gone but the snow had begun. We hiked along the Kilkenny Ridgeline, one of the more isolated sections of the Whites. There are a couple spectacular viewpoints but much of the 26 mile hike is in the woods on trails that ascend and descend two 4000 footers and multiple smaller peaks. My choice of footwear was dumb and problematic but I ultimately did not pay a price for it. Temps dropped to 25 degrees F at night but my combination of Hammock Gear Phoenix 30 and Burrow 20 served me well. That said, I won't deny I thought longingly of my Incubator 0 which would have had me cookin' all night long.

Second day was much easier than the first but we were both tired. We took our time and enjoyed the best views of the trip at the Horn and Rogers Ledge. We also visited the Devil's Hopyard which featured incredible mossy rocks and underground streams. A very unique canyon situated between the hills. I slipped and drenched an arm on the slippery rocks, thankfully no damage and also thankfully at the very end of the trip.

This ended up being my longest video at 23 minutes but it captures the full trip. Let me know what you think!

I just finished watching your video. I thought you did an amazing job. The were enough clips of the right duration to keep the video flowing and hold my attention. Plus, the soundtracks you used were perfect to compliment the "feel" of the video. And, dare I mention those drone shots? Wow! Those added the perfect touch to give a sense of dimension and overall idea of the terrain you guys hiked through. Very nicely done.

I subscribed to your channel and can't wait to see more of your hikes.

Your face and name sounded familiar and then it occurred to me that you gave me some advice this past summer. My buddy and I were going to do the Presidential Traverse this past August but unforeseen family issues (for both of us) required us to cancel the trip only hours before we were set to leave. But, we plan to give it another shot next summer. Again, excellent job with the video!

Thanks Sparky. I hope you are able to get to your Presi Traverse next summer - it's definitely an iconic hike!

I enjoyed this too, especially the drone footage. I had a similar experience recently on the AT at Thomas Knob wearing trail runners. Temps dropped to freezing and we got some snow and sleet. Wish I wore my boots instead. Did you stay warm enough with the 20 degree quilts?

Another great trip and video! Those drone shots really give some 'context' to the landscape up there... gorgeous country.

I love my trail runners as well, but when it's consistently around 32°F and colder it's time for some waterproof boots. My Lone Peaks are no match for snow and slushy mud.

Great video... hiking through the Bilbak Pond section looked pretty neat & the aerial fly-by along the cliffs at Rogers Ledge was cool too. Looks like a fun trip.

    Thanks for posting.

I was warm enough though I did have to pop a couple hand warmers in the night. If I did it again I think I probably would have opted for the 0 degree incubator over the 30 degree phoenix just ensure I was very comfortable I wasn't chilly by any means but I wasn't toasty either.
