    UQ suspension attachment

I'm turning one of Costco (actually Amazon) down throw blankets into an underquilt and was trying to decide the best way to do the suspension. The simple approach is just to sew or tie shock cord to the four corners of the underquilt. The other approach is to sew channels along two edges of the underquilt and run a continuous loop of shock cord through both sides. I had initially assumed that tying off the 4 corners would be just as good, but I have noticed a tendency of the underquilt sides to puff out and gape if I shift around the wrong way. Do the sewn channels work better for underquilts?

When I made mine, I sewed the shock cord through full-length side channels. IMO, this is the best way. I also made prusiks to attach each corner to the suspension. This allows me to position the UQ anywhere I want along the primary suspension. Lastly, I sewed a shock cord channel on each end to cinch the ends against the hammock.

A couple other tips, rip the horizontal seams- leaving just the vertical baffles. Then you create faux baffles to eliminate the sewn-through construction (video below). This also helps give the quilt the benefit of a differential cut- which helps it retain loft when under load.
