Over the summer I visited the Little Dry Run Wilderness of the Mt Rogers National Recreation area of the Jefferson National Forest of Virginia. I picked this location seeking solitude and found it, only seeing one other group on trail over 3 days.
I began at the Henley Hollow Trailhead on the edge of the Little Dry Run Wilderness. Immediately upon starting is a wet-foot-crossing to kick off the trip before the trail starts climbing. The climbing pays off at Comers Rock, affording great 360-degree views of the surrounding land from the base of an old fire tower. After enjoying the view I backtracked to a campsite I had spotted for the night.
Day 2 was another day of beautiful weather and beautiful hiking. Part of my route followed along the Iron Mountain Trail, an old location of the Appalachian Trail. Another portion of the route was along the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. After about 10 miles I made it to camp in an area known as Horse Heaven. I'm no horse, but the view was heavenly to me as well.
The third day descended through Henley Hollow towards the trailhead as the accompanying creek alternates between flowing beside the trail and running lower through the hollow. All in all I had a great adventure and enjoyed this piece of Virginia Wilderness.
Thanks for watching!
