The general guideline with down is the smallest needle you can use and the thickest thread that can fit through the needle.

Down can escape through needle holes even with thread in them.

Ive jyst finished my topquilt and used 80's because i had nothing else(lvl4 covid lockdown) and madeira polyneon 40 embroidery thread.

The thread was a bit to small and the needles should have been 65's or 70's.

I use Mara 100 (also known as "sew-all") thread for quilts, and a 70 needle. Since there is hardly any load on quilt seams, it doesn't make sense to use thicker threads. And as noted, thicker threads need thicker needles, which leave larger holes. They also tend to pucker thin fabrics.

Hutzelbein - for top quilt, would you use a universal needle or a microtex 70. I just got some Nylon Taffeta 20den from Extremtextil and am trying to figure out if one needle type is better than the other for this fabric.

As far as I know, Microtex is the best needle type for delicate fabrics like the ones we use. I certainly had never problems sewing my quilt fabrics (or hammock fabrics) with Microtex needles.

I have been using the Tera 80 Guterman thread for my last few projects, it is smaller and really strong, seems to make the sewing on delicate s a lot easier, just something to think about.

We use Guterman Mara 100. We tried MARA 70 for a bit but it didn't sew as well as the 100 so we switched back. For needles, we use Schmetz size 12.

I also use Tera 80 for quilts. I should probably use a size 11 needle, but often make do with the size 14 I also use with Tera 60. For straps and heavy hammock connections I use Tera 40 with a size 19 needle. I should learn about Microtex needles, I think.
