NC > Linville Gorge, First Timer

I've totally worn out MI and IN, so it's time to get some more windshield time and branch out. The views here look well worth the visit and I always enjoyed watching Shug and Hickery hike the gorge.

After having already planned the trip, I recently went on a first date with this girl I met online. Literally during the first date, I half-jokingly asked if she wanted to come along since she's big into backpacking as well...she said yes!! I did not expect that. Driving 10 hours to hike the gorge for 4 days...how's that for a 3rd date? Could be great, could be a disaster. I sure we'll have an amazing time!

A big thanks to everyone that helped me with a little intel and suggestions. The drive time and terrain itself require more than my usual "show up and figure it out" attitude. Slow and steady, we will heed the warning about "gorge miles".

You'll both have a great time I'm sure. The Gorge is a very special place.

Pack in a surprise dessert for one night or even a cork roller ball for her to massage her feet. The little bit of extra weight might make you the hero.

    haha. Excellent tip.

OneClick, I just got back Tuesday from another ITAYG southern loop. The water levels were higher than my last trip back in April. They usually go down in the fall but we’ve had some localized rain in the mountains. Make sure you check the USGS gauges if you plan on crossing between east and west rim trails. I’d probably avoid the Spence Ridge crossing if you want a repeat date/trip…

LOL!!! Good thinking. I did already pick up a surprise snack she said she liked.

It's kinda scary, a possibility with all that drive time and hiking! But I'm sure we'll be fine.

Yes I've been checking that. Went from something crazy like 2500 down to 200cfs. So I hope for little rain leading up to the trip to keep it dropping.

That would give me apprehensiveness. That is why I often come up with excuses to at least drive alone when meeting new folks on trail.
    Good luck with it.

I wouldn't take it anyway, but while looking thru my gear last night I realized my bear spray expired in 2018. I wonder if it looses some 'heat', or the propellant wears out?

Go do a test blast. Just a quick shot. I have done that with mine. BE UPWIND and hold your breath.
Most bears, if not all are on the West side of Gorge.
