BTW - if you use the Avenza maps some of the water sources noted on the map (on the east rim) are dry. The pipe at Shortoff was flowing well as were most of the streams off the LGT on west side. If you choose to do the stretch between Table Rock and Shortoff (where the Chimneys are located) make sure you fill up on water ahead of time.

Thanks, I was planning on some of those. I'll put more faith into the "drought resistant" spots marked on the map. Great map, I like how they make that distinction.

I always wear trail running shoes. I know the trails here are rough, but does that mean trail runners are OUT?

I always wear trail runners as well. Opinions vary, but I prefer something lighter that dries faster. I've found that your feet are going to get wet either way. You'll only have the 2 river crossing to worry about unless it rains.

I absolutely agree. But besides the dry/wet factor, the "support" for rougher trails got me thinking. I don't even know if that's an issue for me. Mid-style boots in the past just made my feet hot and I'm not sure there was any beneficial "support" going on there anyway. But still, it has me thinking coming from flat easy trails.

I wear the same model Solomon's that my buddy in Colorado uses on the CDT. He says the only difference is they wear out fast on rock. 300-400 miles and they are shot. I use mine around here maybe 30 to 40 days out of a year and they feel like Soccer cleats on anything other than the trail. So you may be over thinking the boot thing just a bit.

I have a pair of WP Merrell Stretch Chameleons and the Solomon vents. Both are trail runners. I haven't done actual boots for a while now. Hiking for several years with out any mishap. I've probably twisted both ankles close to a dozen times each playing one sort of ball or another when I was younger. Occasionally I will roll one a bit, but never blown one out on the trail.

You will be fine me thinks.

I just finished the south loop in my Saucony Peregrines. They were fine on the rock trails and my feet didn’t overheat. My brother came along this time and wore mid cut boots (Keen Targhees). He said he appreciated the extra ankle support, but enjoyed taking them off while at camp.
