Went camping in the snow at Elk Park Falls with a blind date on first date, second date was bar hopping in Blowing Rock; third date was a hike on the AT on New Years and we ended up in a blizzard. Other groups camping in the area were being blown away while still in their tents due to the winds. Yes we were using tents as this was the early 70's. I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
@ OneClick, I've hiked the east rim from Spence trailhead, up to Table Rock, across the Chimneys to Saddle Camp, and back in trail runners with no issues. I hiked Rock Jock yesterday in trail runners with no issues. I appreciate the light weight of trail runners. If you usually have success with them then you should be OK in the Gorge.

When do you plan to hit the gorge?

Trying to get a hold on the weather. NWS lets you click on the map for a precise location and I trust they know what they're doing figuring in elevation. But a high of 58° up to 76° just 2 miles away/lower. That's legit? Dumb question from a dumb flat-lander hoosier.

when I was there last week it stayed in the high 60s overnight on the LGT near the river, felt very humid too. When I camped up at the Chimneys it was 10 degrees cooler. Weather can vary a lot over short distances between the the foothills and what you’ll experience in the higher elevations of the blue ridge.
