    DIY Hammock

I searched around a bit, but most of what I have found requires sewing. I don't mind sewing, but at the moment I don't have the time to sew hems and channels on the fabric. I have 4 yards of ripstop nylon and was looking around and found this video https://youtu.be/AJlEQpcbM1I on how to connect the end. I considered whipping it as well, but this looks easier in some ways. Looking at the video, I linked, I would figure a continuous loop would probably work well. If you have any suggestions or links to videos I would appreciate it. I currently sleep every night in a 10'5" hammock, but was thinking a longer one would give me a better lay, hence the experimenting with DIY.

There is nothing wrong with the method in the video.

People on this forum tend to get a bit carried away with all the bells n whistles-to be expected really,it is a specialist hammock forum.

I make all my own gear, mostly because its just not available here, but if it were available at a reasonable cost i would buy it.

Having said that i have made quite a few hammocks for varioys reasons and the most satisfying are the simplest-just like this vid

Main purpose of hemming is to prevent fraying. I think you can prevent fraying by cutting the fabric with a heated knife, like a wood-burning pen.

You can avoid that as well if you dont cut the edges at all.

Use the selvage edge as is.

    It does not unravel

    Not even close.

Both knots you displayed joined 2 pieces of rope.

A bowline does not do this.
The photo below IS a bowline

Above technique is called a "sheet bend". Its one of the basic knots, and happens to work well for making a hammock. A whipping also works. You can also use a sheet bend and then whip the extra fluff if that bothers you. You do not need to sew channels on the ends.

I do recommend hemming the edges though. Not hemming the edges gives the possibility of tearing the fabric when you sit in it. I've had this happen before, so it isnt just theoretical.

Yep,sheet bend and double sheet bend for the other one i think.

    I use them occasionally.

Interesting about your edge failure, ive never had one tear like that.

I try to be gentle getting in-i spread the hammock as wide as possible, shift it back and up a bit and gently lean into it.

In a hurry you can make a no sew hammock from nothing but a drop of cloth and suspension rope!
