Lightbulb New DIY side table/fire table

    Hi
Ever since I went camping this past summer at a site where there was no picnic table, I've been trying to come up with ideas for a portable small table that could be used when there's no table on site, if I want a table near the campfire or for a hammock side table.
Keep in mind that this is just for kayak camping, not backpacking.

I ran a bunch of different ideas through my head. (In fact, this was a strategy I employed to help me fall asleep for quite a few nights)
I considered various folding approaches and fabric, etc, but finally decided to make a tabletop that fit in the rear well of my SOT kayak. This would allow me to carry it and have it not take up any space. It also provides a bonus advantage by being a deck that keeps sloshing water from getting the gear wet that's in the well (even though most of it is in dry bags). It's finished with a few coats of marine spar varnish (I dislike polyurethane)

I cut a cardboard template to the shape of the kayak well and used a leftover piece of 3/8" AC plywood. Added two holes for rubber cupholder inserts (from my car, unused). The kayak has two ribs in the rear well and so the notches on the side of the table conform to those ribs. the notch at the end simply mimics the style of the side ones. It's kind of cool, to me, that the supports are inboard of the edge and not sticking out. It also helps to keep the legs where they belong.

The legs are sticks cut and shaped on site, so I don't have to carry those if I don't want to. The ring clips that hold the legs are actually clutch plates from a Jorgensen Pony pipe clamp.
I drilled holes in the tab end to accommodate (stainless) mounting bolts. In operation, the legs are sharp on the bottom end and are driven into the ground. the top of the legs go thru the clutch plates. When the table is dropped, they are "floppy" and they clamp against the legs just as they did on the black pipe. The table top can be adjust20211001_110542_HDR_copy_867x1156.jpg20211001_110542_HDR_copy_867x1156.jpg20210929_163712_HDR_copy_1156x867.jpg20210929_163723_HDR_copy_867x1156.jpg20210929_162955_copy_867x1156.jpg20210929_162755_copy_867x1156.jpg20211001_110752.jpg20211001_110752.jpg20210929_161112_copy_867x1156.jpged for desired height and to get it level.

Pretty happy with the way it turned out. Saw the old thread here about hammock side tables so thought I'd share.
Having a really difficult time figuring out how to add photos. Hope I can figure it out and upload some.
Update: I've been trying for some time. No matter what I do, I can't upload photos. I'm not a computer noob at all. but this aint working. sorry...I know it's kinda worthless without photos.: UPDATE:. Well I reduced the size of the photos and that seemed to be the critical part. But man, the layout and options suck.
The results are not pretty. Oh well. You get the idea. (20210920_174336_copy_867x1156.jpg20210920_174336_copy_867x1156.jpg20210929_162948_copy_867x1156.jpg

Looks great. Very practical. I'd just use black zip ties and a small hole near each of the 3 slots to attach to the legs.

    Nice work.

If you tip over is the table top attached to something to keep it from sinking? If not maybe tie it off to a drybag. They float pretty well itll give you a chance at recovery.

    Again nicely done.

Way to go! Awesome blend of function and style. That table is a beaut!
