Tablecloth Taffeta DIY hammocks with two 0-deg F bags with 3.5-lbs of Thermolite synthetic insulation each. When you are cold, insulation only traps one's metabolisms heat, which presents numerous variables. These two bags would fill up a 50-liter pack by themselves.

These are No-Limit brand $35.00 each on sale at Academy Sports - a decade ago.

Not for biped transportation, to be sure; yet the concept is adjustable for circumstances.

Use your imagination... storage, or insulation, or sleeping pad...

I’ve used both, but the double layer with pad is pretty convenient, especially with a bridge hammock

I got the double layer but I'm not using a pad yet. The underquilt is doing pretty well.

I think you are going to enjoy the double layer, whether you use a pad or a quilt. It gives you options and I have always favored them because I could load however much I wanted inside the hammock and not be worried about the weight. It is fairly Fat-Guy or Gear Monster Foolproof.

    Best to you!

I am moving toward my first (well, second technically) hammock and am strongly leaning toward double layer for bug/pad reasons. As a canoe camper primarily, the weight isn't really a factor.

I mostly kayak so we have the same lack of concern for weight/bulk. If you like a firmer feel, a double layer will give you that. But I wouldn’t do it for “bug” reasons unless you plan to lay in just the hammock with the clothes your mother made you. Usually, when in a hammock, you are already “double layer” because you have a UQ - or a UQP. If the Pad is only for go-to-ground, you don’t need a DL for that because it’s not going to move around on the ground. If you’ll be using the pad in the hammock instead of a UQ, that’s different. If you have both, I’m sure there’s plenty of room in the canoe for an in-a-dry-bag UQ.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Well I went for double layer. I was out at about 0°F....put an Ensolite blue pad between the layers and underquilt....it was super comfy. Also....double layer let's you get the fabric you want inside...and a durable fabric for outside.

Being budget conscious, my thinking is that I would buy the double layer and start with a pad. Like most, I imagine, I'd move to an underquilt over time as budget allows.

I've been considering a double layer on/off for years. This last weekend I was out camping around 32f and the second night I slid a sheet of reflective packing material between my UQ/pod and single layer hammock (ENO DN DX) on night two. This probably acted as a VB, but to the point of this thread, the packing material held its position quite well!
