Which Material to Chose for my New Hammock Gear TopQuilt?

    Hey hangers!

So I am placing a new order for a hammock gear topquilt in order to change my temperature rating from a 20* to either a 30 or 40* to help with weight savings & a more realistic approach to my hammocking style. I am planning on going with their premium 950 line BUT what material should I chose & why?

10D vs 15D for the exterior portion of the TQ? Taffeta or plain 10D for the interior & why? My current TQ was 10D/10D but I didn't do prior research into the material, only the temperature & weight savings primarily.

In the past I always went with 10D inside and 20D outside. I think the options changed now. I only have one quilt with 10/10 combo (40° TQ) and it's super soft. I tend to like the heavier stuff though, not sure why. I think I just feel like it will be more durable even though I haven't had issues with any quilt. There's really nothing in the hammock to harm a quilt, other than a sharp fingernail?

The 10D does pack down really well. Using 20D outside for wind protection has been mentioned in the past but I'm not sure there is any truth to that.

Since buying a few 10D quilts, it’s all I will buy now, color choice is second.

You got me excited for a moment, because I hoped that they offer a 15D option again. But this only seems to be the case for the camo fabrics. I would always opt for 15D over 10D because 15D is a lot more robust than 10D. The 10D is wafer-thin and it doesn't take much to rip it (ask me how I know...). It's super soft, though. I guess if you count gramms and are willing to take very good care of your quilt at all times, 10D is the way to go. I doubt that 10D ripstop is a lot more robust than the 10D taffeta, so it's probably a coin toss. Taffeta often is a bit softer, though.

After many nights in a hammock I know I prefer a bit more of a substantial fabric in my TQ. It helps me slide back into the TQ whilst in the hammock especially when I get up at night. Provides just a bit more structure.

I thought it was as well! I looked at my old order slip (from Jan of 2021) and saw the selection options which is why I made this post! Only to see that it is indeed, only the camo options.

So basically, 15D, or 20D is a higher strength fabric AKA will hold up with more of a lighter beating than the 10D. And the 10D taffeta is softer to the skin than plain 10D?

Hi there Jade- actually my keyboard does not have the degrees symbol, hence the *, which you assumed incorrectly that I have one on my keyboard. The * means the degree symbol.

TaraH, if you have a Mac, the degree symbol is ° (Shift+Option+8). I'm sure there's an equivalent combination on a PC.
