    Smile Hello from Ontario, Canada

    Hello community,

I have a friend who carried a hammock when backpacking in the backcountry, and I was mesmerized. I didn't know you could actually sleep in a hammock for real. I got myself a Hennessy Expedition Zip and luckily had another friend who told me that when I want to head out in the fall, I will need an underquilt.

From here, the story gets more complicated. I am in Canada, and for some reason, underquilts are hard to come by. I purchased a OneTigris Twilight Trekker Pro which is rated to work down to -5 degrees Celsius (23F) but it didn't hold up. I threw an aluminium pad into the hammock to stay warm when it wasn't going down to 5 degrees Celsius... I am now on a hunt for a proper underquilt made of ethically sourced downs (usually trying to work my way around down, but guess I have to make do with ethically sourced or recycled down to prevent CBS).

I have been out there for some 20 years now (started when I was about 11 years of age with the scouts in Germany), including backpacking, bikepacking, and canoeing. In the past couple of years, I've been on canoeing or backpacking trips in southern Ontario in spring or fall and currently try to push my limits into winter camping.

Looking forward to learning from the experienced folks here!

PS: Needless to say my first nights sleeping in a hammock were amazing. Can't wait to get a proper underquilt and get out some more.

Thanks, Shug! I did see them a while ago and was a bit overwhelmed by the customization. Thinking about it now, it makes sense to do the research.

By the way, I love your videos! They helped me a great deal in figuring out how to use a hammock.

I am in Ontario as well, welcome.

Whatever vendor you pick, give them a call and let them help you pick what you need. Most will be very helpful and give you some additional insight and advice about their products.

I think Gerrit gets his down from the local Hutterite colony where they raise geese for food.

Thank you, Sheener and Bothwell Voyageur, for pointing me to the HOG Store. I am in touch with Gerrit now. With his lead times, I can have a proper UQ for my next trip in about a month which is awesome. I will keep LSOH in mind for their amazing winter UQs.

Thanks Cruiser51 and Bubba for the welcome! Great to see how many folks from Canada are on this platform! Are you aware of any group hangs in Ontario this fall? I feel there's lots to learn about hammocking that is best done through observing.

    Have a great day!
