ViDEO: BWCA Old Pines and Kekekabic Trails

Couple of nights out up into the recently re-opened Boundary Waters Canoe Area out of Ely, Minnesota. Took the Snowbank Trail to Kekekabic Trail to Moiyaka Lake. Camped the night. Then did the Old Pines Trail back to Disappointment Trail. Camped. Then hiked out. Good couple of nights slumber in the Superior Gear Starlite hammock. The ULA OHM toted my load wonderfully.

Shug, thank you for sharing your trip, now I feel more relaxed. Only time I’ve eaten half a candy bar in my whole life, was when sharing
    Amazing beautiful wilderness and sunsets

Great video and trip report thanks for taking us along.

When I lived out west I loved looking at Topo maps for old trails you’d never heard about before. Glad to see those exist in MN as well. It’s a good reminder there’s a whole lot out there to see besides the Superior trail.

Hate to say it but I don't even really enjoy the SHT as much anymore as it has gotten so crowded and not truly a fan of sharing campsites if possible.
The BWCA walking trails are more remote...no trail markers other than cairns and the occasional piece of tape or an old rotten sign post here and there. Have to get a permit but for me it is so worth it.

Another great report Shug. Thanks for taking us along as usual. I'm heading up north tomorrow and I can already smell the pines. Getting down to 36° one night, talk of frost. WHOOO!!!!!

I hate to see the crowds. EVERYWHERE I go. I'm still blaming big bad Rona.

I planned on doing the Linville Gorge late October. I'm guessing that's well past peak being to the west of you and higher up? Still some color maybe?

Yeah I think that Covid definitely made the SHT and outdoors in general WAY more popular. People stuck closer to home, werent going abroad for vacations, or going to big cities. I'm hoping it quiets down in the coming years.

That said, I go out on the weekends on the SHT in winter and dont see a soul! Occasionally at the trailhead I'll talk to some snowmobilers but dont see anyone as soon as Im on the trail.

They need a few more campsites along the way. That would be swell.
Glad most folks don't take to Winter camping for sure.

Wonderful trip video. Those colors in the sky at sunset are magnificent. Glad to see the BWCA (that part anyway) has survived.

Another fine addition to the Shug series...good to see you out 'n' about.
Mountain views are good for the soul....& getting to them is good for my waistline.
