I know you asked specifically about buckles, but there is a lightweight option that uses a tree strap (or hugger) and a simple length of Amsteel with a hardware attachment at the hammock that is just about as simple as using straps with buckles. Take a look at the Turtle Tie. If weight is a concern and simplicity is desired, this is certainly a knot-free option. It appears that, if properly deployed, it might be the solution to the problems Dutch encountered with his Speed Hook, the bit of bling every hammock hardware fan had hoped would succeed.
I, for one, happen to like incorporating hardware in the suspension. And that's coming from a guy who REALLY likes knots (but hasn't gotten as deeply into them as Phantom Grappler!!!). I mostly use straps these days with Beetle Buckles.
