I know you asked specifically about buckles, but there is a lightweight option that uses a tree strap (or hugger) and a simple length of Amsteel with a hardware attachment at the hammock that is just about as simple as using straps with buckles. Take a look at the Turtle Tie. If weight is a concern and simplicity is desired, this is certainly a knot-free option. It appears that, if properly deployed, it might be the solution to the problems Dutch encountered with his Speed Hook, the bit of bling every hammock hardware fan had hoped would succeed.

I, for one, happen to like incorporating hardware in the suspension. And that's coming from a guy who REALLY likes knots (but hasn't gotten as deeply into them as Phantom Grappler!!!). I mostly use straps these days with Beetle Buckles.

All cinch buckles work by pinching the webbing hard and the webbing can become almost molded to them. The buckles with the insert are easier to release, but the buckles with two plates hold the load more secure. And there's an easy fix for the latter type of buckles - just add a cord loop to the front or lower buckle plate like this:

This will allow you to release the buckles easy peasy. My favorite cinch buckles are the Dutch Beetle Buckles, because they keep the webbing more securely aligned, a very light-weight, and can be detached from the hammock easily.

As a bigger fella, I've been using the WB buckles for years without any issues. The newer versions come with small loops of cordage that help release the buckles if they get locked down too tightly.

Recently have been trying out the Superior Gear buckles, and I like them so far. Much faster to use than having the feed the strap through both buckles every time.

Phantom Grappler is the knot man!!!

I had not seen the cinch buckles with the small loop. Cool.

When I use buckles it's the aluminum ones from Warbonnet. Simple, easy to adjust even under light or moderate load, easy to use with cold fingers...they just all around work great for me.

Usually I use Turtle Ties from Fugal. Super light, and also easy to use and adjust. A bit more finicky but working great so far.
