    Ungathering using double lines

I've found that I like what my Big Agnes air mattress does in my gathered end hammock except that the ends are pinched......... I've thought a lot about using a longer upper and lower gather strap.... is that the term for the piece of webbing that passes through the pockets at the ends? Then the tree strap would make a double wrap around the tree with each end going to a carabiner at either end of the gather strap. This would reduce the gather force, and allow the mattress to lay more easily inside the hammock...... It would vary from tree to tree.

i thought a lot about various methods to do this, for other reasons which will quickly become apparent .

this is basically equivalent to using a significantly longer hammock, so if you want to quickly test if it helps, that's the easiest way to test (assuming you have some fabric laying around).

you could achieve what you describe above, in a more consistent manner, by using some sort of short spreader bars (so you don't need double lines all the way to the tree, and are not dependent so much on the width of the tree and the distance to the tree)

let us know how it goes if you experiment with this

    Like DD does?

I have tried a couple of methods, including mini spreader bars. Some worked better than others, but none worked like I hope it would. In my opinion the best option was the Timp Hitch, because it prevents the hammock from "tipping" in one direction or the other. However, the effect is not super huge. It's easier to use a longer hammock, or switch to a bridge or 90° hammock.
