First night outside - 66 degrees - UQ needed?

    Howdy all,

So am planning a backyard hang tonight - it will be my first night in my hammock. According the forecast it will be a low of 66 F tonight. I *think* I can get away without a UQ but am not sure...

I'll be at home so have access to blankets, sleeping bags, clothing etc in abundance (no UQ unfortunately)..

Interested to hear what the experienced folks think about this...

    Thanks in advance

For sure you will. Can start out feeling good but about midnight or 1am you will for sure feel a chill on back and buttocks.
Toss in a camping pad and enjoy some hammock time.

OK so have now completed a night.

I ended up finding a a pad I had lying around, was about 3/4 of inch foam and a sleeping bag

Was very warm (perhaps too much)

I would say I got a 6/10 sleep. I couldn't seem to get diagonal enough, I think my bug net is constraining me - I'll need to find a better one...so I have some more testing/tweaking....

So here I go down the rabbit hole....

Once you try a proper underquilt you'll be snagged like a largemouth bass!

Early on in my tree dwelling experience I tried a couple of mats — air and CCF — in my GE hammocks and found them totally unacceptable, negating the main benefits of hanging in the first place. A decent UQ is total nirvana.

I'm glad you were warm throughout the night - for me I've decided that almost any temp requires an UQ for me to sleep warm enough. Enjoy going down the rabbit hole!

I always hang my UQ, even here in TX when it will only drop into the 70's at night. But then it's a 40 degree, 3/4 one. I regulate while in the hammock by opening up the TQ, sticking a foot out, laying it off my chest or any other thing that regulates. I'd rather regulate while half asleep and in the hammock than getting up, in the dark, and looking for a pad or the UQ....because I didn't think I'd need it.

Kudos! Next hang is going to be 10/10 or 9/10 at least.

What are dimensions of your hammock?

Shorter hammocks such as an ENO are difficult to get a good diagonal lay, usually get a banana lay with no diagonal

Plenty of room for disagreement here, but I recommend a hammock to be 11x5 feet minimum, for a good diagonal lay and less chance of CRP-
    calf ridge pressure

Great that you got out for an overnight hang
