    Hello,

Newbie from NC. I do a ton of backpacking around western, NC. Not much of a hammocker, but love spending time up on the mountain ridges. Thanks for having me.

Jacob a hearty hello from Denton NC.

Some people have not enjoyed their first few times in their hammock.

Without knowing what gear you used, I’ll guess...
Your hammock was too short, causing you to lay like a banana, or if you got a diagonal lay, that same shortness of hammock can cause CRP—calf ridge pressure.

This is why I recommend a gathered end hammock no less than 11x5 feet.

Or you might have tried to sleep overnight without good insulation—either closed cell foam pad or insulated top quilt and underquilt. If that happened you could get CBS—cold butt syndrome

I guess...a lot, and if I guessed wrong, please forgive me.
Might see you at Grayson Hang. I’ll be the one drinking coffee and telling lies.

Lol, ya probably aren't all that wrong. It's been years since I've slept in a hammock. What did it for me then was a week long trip in what turned out to be a week of nonstop thunderstorms, and torrential downpours. I was fairly new to the outdoors at that time, and I was grossly under prepared all around. Wasn't all the hammocks fault is all I mean.

I tell yall what though, browsing this forum has made me realize how little I know about hammocks, and hammock accessories. Once I get caught up to speed I'm sure I'll give a proper hammock setup another try.

Nice area you are from. I have spent some time out that way and I love the lives from up high. Have you ever spent the night in a hammock?

It's been a years since I've used a hammock, but I have spent roughly 20-30 nights in a hammock dating back sometime between 2013-2015. It was an ENO w/ one of the larger rain flys they were making at that time. No under quilt, or any of these other inventions I'm reading about. I try to spend every other weekend on the trail, and see ALOT of hammock campers, and it's got me wanting to give it a second try w/ proper equipment.

Yes, there is a lot that you can think about when it comes a hammock setup. I will be make it out to the woods this week and take some pics of my set up. I have been spending a good amount of time hanging in the woods as of late, with a good bit of hiking. I will be in NC this weekend for 3 days at a park in the north east called Merchants Millpond SP. It should be fun and I am exited about trying my new hammock. I have found with the 6 or so nights that I feel better in the morning, though I did have one back night of hanging. But I am confident that the new set will be better due to it being a foot longer. The new set up is a Dutch HW Nettles wide that come stock at 11 foot with a URC ridgeline, button knot continuous loops, and a whoopie sling. From what I read that should help my legs feel even better. I'm also making a under quilt out of a poncho liner. My camping gear is a wired mix between mil spec and civilian with a touch of ultra light, but it works and I can afforded(ish) it. There is a ton of good threads to check out on here to help find what you might like the most. I also found that places the Dutch HW and Hammock Gear are good at responding to question about what will work for you and what want from the hammock. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

What is your ground set up? I use a 1.5 person ground sheet and my DD 3Mx3M tarp set up in the teepee configuration for now and I like it as long as I have a sleep pad.
